Ellen Remai

Saskatoon entrepreneur and philanthropist Ellen Remai is Remai Modern’s lead patron. We are extremely grateful for her vision and her legendary generosity.

In 2011, while Remai Modern was in its planning stages and the sod for the project at River Landing had not yet been turned, Ellen Remai announced a donation of $31 million to the new museum, on behalf of the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation. The gift provided $16 million toward construction and $15 million ($500,000 a year for 30 years) to support international exhibition programs.

To recognize this amazing gift —unprecedented in Saskatchewan, and one of the largest private donations to the arts in Canadian history—Saskatoon City Council voted unanimously to name the museum for Ellen Remai.

In 2012, the Frank and Ellen Remai Foundation donated 405 linocuts by Pablo Picasso to Remai Modern. This is the most comprehensive collection of its kind in the world, and the donation prompted surprised and admiring headlines around the world. Ellen Remai’s explanation was simple and sincere. “A great city deserves great art,” she said.
